About Bayou City Breastfeeding
Confident Parents, Thriving Babies
A multidisciplinary lactation practice serving Houston and San Antonio.
We help parents feel confident in the early years, so their babies can thrive. We are a team of board-certified lactation consultants and pediatric chiropractors serving families across Greater Houston and South Texas. We work with parents from pregnancy through the early childhood years, supporting feeding, sleep, oral function, and the moments in between.
Our purpose
Why we exist
Modern infant care is built for efficiency. The average pediatric visit runs less than fifteen minutes, which works for routine well-baby checks but leaves little time for the deeper questions parents often have. New parents also navigate conflicting messages from books, apps, social media, and well-meaning family, often without the extended village that once made early parenthood communal rather than isolating.
The gap is not in care. It is in time, and in continuity.
Parents need someone who will listen to the whole story, not just the urgent question. Someone who knows feeding, sleep, oral function, and development as a connected system rather than separate problems. Someone who keeps showing up across the early years, not just at the moment of crisis.
That is what we built.
Our model
Your family is our patient
Most clinical care divides families into separate patients. The pediatrician sees the baby. The obstetrician sees the birthing parent. Specialists see whoever is referred. Each visit asks one person’s questions and looks at one person’s body.
Our work is built around a different idea. The family is the patient. Feeding, sleep, recovery, partnership, and development are connected, and the people who love them are connected too. A care plan that helps the baby latch but leaves the parent in pain is not finished. A plan that addresses the parent’s milk supply but ignores the older sibling’s adjustment misses what the family actually needs.
When we work with you, we work with the whole picture. Goals come from you. Plans are built around how your family actually lives.
How we practice
How we work with you
Three principles shape every visit. They are not slogans. They show up in scheduling, in how plans get written, in the way we follow up.
You set the goals
Whether the goal is exclusive breastfeeding, exclusive pumping, combination feeding, or another path that works for your family, the plan is yours. Our job is to give you the information and the clinical support to reach the outcome you want. We do not have a preferred outcome we steer you toward.
You stay in the driver’s seat
We share what we know, including the clinical reasoning behind it. You should leave a visit with the same understanding of what is happening with your body and your baby as we have.
The relationship is meant to last
We are not an urgent-care visit. Your needs at six weeks are different from your needs at six months, which are different again from your needs at two years. We expect to know you across those moments, not just the first one.
Behind the scenes, our IBCLCs, our pediatric chiropractors, and our sleep team coordinate when a family’s situation calls for more than one perspective. Each clinician stays within their respective scope, and the family gets care that does not require repeating your story to each new provider. More about what we offer →
Our standard of care
The standard we hold
Our lactation consultants are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). The IBCLC is the internationally recognized board certification for lactation consultants. It requires clinical training, supervised practice hours, a comprehensive exam, and recertification on a defined schedule. We treat that credential as a floor, not a ceiling. Our team participates in continuing education well beyond the required minimum, with regular case review across the practice.
Clear scopes of practice
Our pediatric chiropractors operate under their own licensure and scope, focused on pediatric and postpartum care. The two scopes do not overlap, and we are explicit about which clinician you are seeing and why.
WHO Code compliance
We follow the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. We do not accept commercial sponsorship from formula or pump manufacturers, and we do not steer families toward products in exchange for incentives. Recommendations are based on clinical fit for your situation.
Part of your broader team
With your permission, we communicate with your pediatrician, OB, midwife, or other providers so the care you receive is coordinated rather than fragmented.
We publish our outcomes
We track and publish our own outcomes. Our annual Quality and Outcomes Report is available for any family or referring provider to review. See the report →
Care across the arc
The first three years
The early childhood years are not one phase. They are dozens of small phases, each with its own questions.
In the first weeks, the questions are usually about latch, milk transfer, weight gain, and recovery. Around six weeks, supply settles and new questions appear about pumping, output, and patterns. By the time you go back to work, the logistics of feeding away from your baby become real. Solids start, and old assumptions shift. Sleep changes as the baby develops. Oral function concerns surface at different stages, sometimes in the first week, sometimes much later. Weaning, when it comes, is its own conversation.
We work with families across this whole window. A family that comes to us at the latch stage and a family that comes to us at the toddler stage are getting care from clinicians who understand where each moment fits in the larger pattern.
Our team
Our team across Houston and San Antonio
Our team is built around more than 20 IBCLCs and three pediatric chiropractors working across nine offices in Greater Houston and South Texas. Our hiring standard prioritizes clinical depth, the willingness to keep learning, and the ability to meet families where they are without rushing them. We are a family-friendly workplace, which is not a detail. It shapes who joins us and how long they stay.
Our founder is Suzanne Juel, IBCLC, who has worked in lactation since 2003, started the practice in 2016, and continues to lead it. Read more about her work →
