Babywearing

Babywearing supports breastfeeding in practical ways: skin-to-skin contact, frequent access for cue-based feeding, and free hands for parents managing other children or daily life. The right carrier depends on baby’s age and size, your body, and how you plan to use it. Wraps tend to work better for the newborn period; structured carriers come into their own from a few months onward.

Carriers and references

  • Solly Baby Wrap

A lightweight stretchy wrap, well-suited to the newborn period. Long fabric that wraps around the wearer and baby. Reasonable learning curve. Particularly comfortable for petite parents. Not suitable for heavier babies past around 25 pounds.

  • Boba Wrap

An alternative stretchy wrap with similar function to the Solly. Slightly thicker fabric. Works for the newborn period through the early infant months.

  • Nalakai Ring Sling

A ring sling for quick on-and-off carrying. Useful for older infants and toddlers when you don’t want to fully tie or buckle a carrier. Good for breastfeeding access in public.

  • Ergobaby Omni 360

A structured buckle carrier suitable from newborn through toddler. Multiple carrying positions (front, hip, back). Better for longer wear and heavier babies than wraps. Lumbar support reduces strain for adults.

  • “Why Babywear?: Benefits for You and Your Baby” by Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears RN
