Lactation coverage for TRICARE in Houston and San Antonio
We have some providers in-network with TRICARE West across our Houston and San Antonio offices. We are currently working through some issues with TRICARE coverage, so verifying your benefits before booking is especially important. TRICARE covers up to six one-hour lactation visits per baby. Because our initial postpartum visit is longer than an hour, it uses two visit slots, leaving five total covered visits for most TRICARE patients. After that, additional visits are self-pay.
TRICARE rules to know up front
TRICARE covers lactation services differently from civilian insurance. These are the most important rules to know before booking.
-
Six one-hour visit slots, five effective visits
TRICARE covers up to six one-hour lactation visits per baby. Our initial postpartum visit is longer than an hour, so it counts as two visit slots in TRICARE’s accounting. Most TRICARE patients end up with five total covered visits. Visits beyond that are self-pay.
-
No home visits for TRICARE patients
We are not currently offering home visits to TRICARE patients. All TRICARE lactation visits happen at our offices.
-
There may be some out-of-pocket costs
Unlike most ACA-compliant civilian plans, TRICARE patients may see some out-of-pocket cost for lactation visits. Verification confirms the exact amount before your visit.
How we work with your insurance
-
You submit the intake form
Tell us about your TRICARE plan (Standard, Prime, or other), your sponsor information, and what is going on with feeding.
-
We verify your benefits
Our billing team contacts TRICARE West to confirm your benefits, visit count remaining, and any plan-specific cost-share.
-
You get a written estimate
Before your first visit you receive an email with verified benefits and the expected out-of-pocket cost.
-
We file the claim
After your visit we submit the claim to TRICARE. Cost-share, copay, or any patient-responsibility is billed to the card on file.
Plan-specific details for TRICARE patients
Mom and baby billed separately
If mom and baby have different insurance plans, we submit a claim for each patient under the appropriate plan. Provide insurance information for both during intake.
Telehealth visits are covered
TRICARE covers telehealth lactation visits the same way as in-office visits. If an in-person visit is not feasible, we can schedule telehealth and bill it through your TRICARE plan.
East vs. West region
We are credentialed under TRICARE West. Houston and San Antonio fall in the West region per TRICARE’s geographic split. If you have moved from a TRICARE East region recently, your card and online portal may still show East affiliation. Verification confirms your current network.

TRICARE-specific questions
How many lactation visits does TRICARE actually cover?
TRICARE allows up to six one-hour visit slots per baby. Our initial postpartum visit is longer than an hour, so it uses two slots. Most TRICARE patients end up with five total covered visits: one extended initial visit plus four follow-ups.
Once your covered visits are used, additional visits are billed at our self-pay rate, with the rate confirmed in writing when you approach the cap. Most patients find that this allotment covers the typical postpartum arc, but if you have ongoing complex feeding situations and need more, the self-pay option remains available.
Do you offer home visits for TRICARE patients?
Not at this time. All TRICARE lactation visits happen at one of our offices.
Do I need to wait for my insurance to be verified before booking my appointment?
No. You can book your appointment before your insurance is verified. As long as you submit your insurance information at least 1–2 business days (Monday through Friday) before your appointment, our team will have enough time to verify your coverage prior to your visit. If you are submitting the day before your scheduled visit, please submit by 3 PM so we have time to verify.
If we discover that your plan is not covered or has unusual restrictions, we will notify you by email and text message. If you decide to cancel your appointment due to lack of coverage, we will waive the cancellation fee as long as you request cancellation on the same day we notify you.
Have a different carrier?
We are in-network with these as well.
